Program Overview:

Joshibi was founded in 1900. It is a prestigious art university that boasts the most history and tradition among Japan’s private art schools. In October 2020, we celebrated our 120th anniversary. Joshibi University of Art and Design is a university where you can study various fields of art and design up to the doctoral program at the graduate school.

1) Women’s independence through art;
2) Improvement of women’s social status;
3) Training of professional artists and art teachers

Based on these three founding spirits, Joshibi has produced excellent creative professionals in all fields such as art and design, education, and has sent out women who can become independent in society in the long history of over 120 years. Even now, we are developing creative careers that have both intelligence and sensibility and can be socially and economically independent by utilizing their specialty in art. Joshibi has two campuses, the Suginami campus and the Sagamihara campus. The Suginami campus, which is a 7-minute subway ride from Shinjuku station and is in a quiet and relaxed residential area. The Sagamihara campus, located near Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture, is adjacent to parks and filled with greenery.
Besides, many famous artists have been produced, and Joshibi University of Art and Design is the only private art school in Japan that has produced graduates with the Order of Culture and a Person of Cultural Merit.
On top of that, the activities of graduates are outstanding in the field of characters, and Hello Kitty designer Yuko Yamaguchi, as well as the creators of Cinnamon Roll, Gudetama, and Rilakkuma, are also the Joshibi University of Art and Design graduates.
Joshibi is educating to develop creative professionals that utilize the artistic sensibilities of women.
